The hard truths about downsizing
As you can see from the title, we want to talk about the difficult parts of downsizing so you are prepared ahead of time. This may seem like a non-issue to some, but trust us, you’ll want to think some of these things through beforehand.
So, let's talk about downsizing your house!
Space limitations and emotional attachment:
When it’s time to move, you will want to have gotten rid of some things that you won’t be able to fit into your new space. We’ve all been there, trying to get rid of clutter from a room only to find yourself trying on old clothes or showing off hidden treasures you haven’t touched in years. Nostalgia can hold you back from getting rid of items you no longer have use for, and now, no longer have room for!
It’s time to really focus on those organization and prioritization skills and make room for what’s most important to you! Don’t let the decision fatigue get to you! If it does, take a break and come back.
Adjustment period:
It may take a little time to adapt to your new living space, especially depending on how much you’ve decided to downsize. Daily routines and habits may look a little different moving forward but try not to get frustrated. It will take time, so make sure to give yourself grace as you adjust!
Social implications:
Depending on your lifestyle and sizing adjustments, you may feel the effects on your social life! If you are used to hosting large gatherings and overnight guests, you may need to find alternative ways to socialize or entertain. This can be as simple as smaller gatherings more often or considering the weather to include using indoor and outdoor spaces.
Logistical planning:
Unfortunately, downsizing to a smaller living space may mean getting rid of some of your larger furniture and/or meticulous planning when it comes to where your belongings will go. You may also need to consider investing in some additional organizational help, which could look like physical organizers or professional help.
While some of this may seem scary, we promise it can be done and it can be done well. Our agents have worked with clients in all aspects and stages of life and they would love to help you as you navigate downsizing your home!
